NAFLD is a single disease that is seen in both alcoholics and non-alcoholics especially in those who are overweight and likewise, it is a top item in the list of leading liver diseases in much of the Western world.
The most common cause of NAFLD is being obese or overweight. Logically if you are eating more than the recommended number of calories per day and you are not burning off these excess calories through rigorous physical activity, your liver is going to end up absorbing and storing more fat than usual. The end result is your liver will gradually become fattier and fattier.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSE WITH FATTY LIVER DISEASE
At this point, most patients can still be helped by diet and exercise.
The true solution to having a healthier liver is through a healthy diet, which is 85% of the struggle.
You can exercise all you want, but if your daily meals are packed with calories from sugar, you can expect little or no improvement of your fatty liver. If you exercise for 30 minutes and eat half a box of doughnuts or half a cake to reward yourself, you will get nowhere.
The same applies to individuals who reward themselves by eating oversized pizzas, or by drinking two liters of soda after dieting or exercising for a few days.
The benefits of exercise are dwarfed by the sheer number of empty calories being added to the body. Depending on the degree of damage, further liver damage and inflammation may be halted to decrease any progression towards cirrhosis.
Consequently, preventing or slowing down the progression of cirrhosis is of utmost importance as it is a risk factor for liver cancer.
